Firewalls Website design by Kevin SwitzerHomepage

Any computer with a persistent connection to the Internet should have some form of firewall for security.  A firewall can be a software program on your computer to monitor and control port activity, or a router (hardware) to configure Internet connection sharing and security outside of your computer by blocking or dropping unwanted packets of data from gaining access to your systems. These can simply be bad data packets or possibly code used by a hacker who is trying to gain access to your system and take control.  A hardware firewall such as a router is recommended for the best security.
A firewall will always require some limited knowledge of networks to be setup securely. Many software firewalls simply report Internet noise, needlessly wasting our time. Often users will change some settings only find they have lost Internet access. This makes a router more attractive, for ease of setup and use, and less intrusive without constant decisions to make about settings.
Some common software firewalls are Zone Alarm and Sygate.  A firewall is meant to keep hackers out and keep your data in. The best protection is a hardware firewall, to stop the intruders before they get in.
